MEET MERCEDES ROETMAN

4 DECEMBER 2024

Introducing MS Ambassador Mercedes.

Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, Mercedes is thrilled to help raise awareness about MS by sharing her own journey.

Mercedes had been experiencing unexplained numbness, balance and fatigue issues for some years prior to her diagnosis. These symptoms eventually led to a referral to a neurologist. After living a busy lifestyle in the education field, her diagnosis came as a shock.

“This turbulent time led me to then investigate what having MS meant for me. I sensibly chose to participate in a “Knowledge is Power” course with MS Plus, which provided me with the tools to understand my illness and how to deal with it.”

Mercedes has learnt to slow down in life, understanding the importance of looking after herself, reducing stress, exercising regularly, and learning how to say “no” to requests of her time when she is not feeling well.

Living with MS, Mercedes is learning new things about herself everyday, and she is as determined as ever to continue doing the things she wants to do despite her diagnosis. She wants to prove to herself that she can still follow her dreams.

Excitingly, Mercedes is now a Volunteer MS Plus Ambassador and is so looking forward to share her story and watch everyone have the best day at the MS Walk Run + Roll.

“I really love coming out to these events. It's so great to see everyone raising money and awareness of MS and doing it with such enthusiasm and creating such a wonderful atmosphere.”

To all the fundraisers taking part in this year's MS Walk Run + Roll, Mercedes has this to say:

“As a person living with MS, I am so grateful for all the fundraising that is done and always feel humbled and so grateful to everyone who takes part in these events.”

Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong disease for which there is currently no known cure. This is why funding for support and services, for people like Mercedes, is so vital while the search for a cure continues.
