2024 Melbourne MS Walk Run + Roll

NO ONE SHOULD FACE MS ALONE!

Can you imagine waking up one day unable to do the everyday things you would usually take for granted? Like not being able to see properly (or at all), unable to get out of bed, walk to the phone to call someone – anyone – or live a life without pain?

All of a sudden, your world has changed.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often debilitating disease which attacks the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves). It is the most common neurological disease in young adults and often attacks people at a time in their lives when they are planning families and building a career. Three out of four people living with MS are women.

With your support, we can allow people living with multiple sclerosis access to vital support services, like MS Connect, MS Peer Support and MS Employment Support Programs. We’ll also be helping bring new treatments closer to reality, investing in repairing myelin damage to restore function that has been lost for people with progressive forms of the disease.

On behalf of over 33,300 Aussies living with multiple sclerosis – THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

My Journey with Multiple Sclerosis

Thursday 21st
On the 19th of May myself and afew of my close family and friends will be participating in the MS walk, run & roll event at Albert Park Lake to raise awareness and funds for those living with Multiple Sclerosis.

With 2 years since diagnosis falling on the same day as the walk, I thought I’d share my journey so far, i do apologise as it’s a rather lengthy one!

This photo holds a lot of emotions for me, it takes me back to a time where uncertainty was at its highest. I didn’t have a diagnosis yet but I knew something was off. A life full of random aches, pains and symptoms that no one can relate to or understand. You end up getting REALLY good at knowing your body and being able to explain exactly what and where the pain is. Except no one really takes it or you seriously, you begin to feel as though it’s in your head or you’re over exaggerating. This is the type of thing MS survivors experience over and over again.

My story started in May of 2022, afew days before this photo was taken. I woke up with what felt like eye strain in my left eye, not thinking much of it as I assumed I’d just stayed up abit too late packing my bags and getting ready to fly interstate for Jacks graduation. The pain then turned into pressure over the day and night, slowly worsening and turning into blurred vision, this is when it felt a bit different. While I was away I went to an optometrist to have an eye test, but once again NOTHING. Everything was normal, the slightest difference in the colour red but no explanation, physically EVERYTHING seemed fine. The appointment ended with “it should go away over the next day or so”.

The blurred vision turned into loss of vision.
Once I landed back in Melbourne I made a frantic call to my parents who took it seriously enough to make a second optometrist appointment that night. This was scary, there were LOTS of tears.
From there I was sent to the Eye and Ear hospital in East Melbourne for MORE testing, they were able to conclude I was suffering from optic neuritis (an inflamed optic nerve), something only picked up on and confirmed by an MRI.
I was then sent to St Vincent’s Hospital to be put on a course of IV corticosteroids for 5 days and oral steroids for another 11 to eliminate or at least decrease the inflammation. During my hospital stay I had a bunch of never ending tests, including an MRI on my brain.

A week later I had an appointment with a Neurologist, which is when I heard the life altering words “these white spot on your MRI are lesions on your brain, these do indicate Multiple Sclerosis”.

After lots of research, staring at and comparing MRIs, more tests and appointments than I can count and some meltdowns in the shower, I’d love to say it’s sunk in but I’d be lying. With some lifestyle changes, medication and the BEST support system a gal could ask for, I’ll be okay!!
This isn’t something that will just go away and I can respect that. While right now there isn’t a cure, there is hope for one and that’s what this fundraiser is all about! The money that is so generously donated means more to me than anything literally EVER, every cent is a tiny bit of hope for our future.
On behalf of my family and friends, thank you from the bottom of my heart 🤍

I’ve attached a link to our donation page in the comments, whether you donate or share it is making a world of difference!
