We Did It!!

19/9/2021
Today was The Day... It was freezing, raining, slippery, windy and truly meteorologically crazy in Launceston, Tasmania today!

Massive Congratulations to Every Single Person who managed to show up and battle today's super-challenging conditions to achieve their own goals!  Also a big thank you to the organisers and volunteer team who were all completely awesome in such difficult circumstances!

What a day for a 9.5km run! - It was hard work, but I managed to run the whole distance.

I feel a great sense of pride today, and I have such deeply profound feelings of gratitude for every single dollar that so many extremely generous people have managed to raise for this incredibly worthy cause.  THANK YOU! You are amazing, and I am eternally grateful to you all. xxx

My MS can follow Me.

28/7/21
My diagnosis can follow along behind me, and NOT the other way around.

Yoga after my 2nd monthly treatment infusion in hospital this morning.
🔥🖤🙏💪

Ongoing, lifelong treatments for MS are about reducing the risk of relapses, minimising disability, and therefore improving quality of life for people with MS.

The treatment I am having is very clever indeed - it binds to molecular "keys" on the surface of white cells in my bloodstream : this prevents them crossing the blood brain barrier, so they can no longer get at the cells in my brain and spinal cord to attack the myelin sheaths around nerve fibres: it stops the damaging process - "demyelination" - that causes the symptoms of MS.

I am extremely grateful to be living in Australia, where this very expensive but very effective treatment is subsidised by Medicare. The modern medications used to treat MS have revolutionised disease management, and vastly improved long term quality of life for people who live with it.

Yoga and MS

23/7/21
“Yoga teaches us to cure what need not be endured and endure what cannot be cured.” - B.K.S. Iyengar

10 weeks ago, I was not able to do what you see in this photo - I had lost proprioception - balance and coordination - in my left leg.. that's the one I'm standing on here... this photo was taken today.

My neurological system, beaten into submission by time and heavy duty steroid treatment, is now back to normal... and for this I am incredibly grateful.

Yoga has been the absolute linchpin of my health and wellbeing, both physical and mental, over the last 3.5yr. I firmly believe the practice has helped to delay onset of symptoms from the MS process which has probably been simmering along in my brain and spinal cord for some time (likely years).

I would like to express profound thanks and love to my amazing yoga teacher, Rebecca Chabot, who has travelled alongside me on this MS rollercoaster I didn't buy a ticket for. Rebecca has been staunch and extremely generous in her support of me.  She has actually been by my side since I started practicing yoga, including encouraging and supporting me to continue with energetic and liberating Vinyasa practice during my 5th pregnancy, right up to birth.  This pregnancy culminated in delivery of a very healthy baby in 2019, when I was 46 (ie REALLY old to be giving birth!).. I had been fit and active through all my previous pregnancies, but I truly believe practicing right through that last pregnancy at such a grand old age made for a wonderfully healthy and easy antenatal period.  The birth required immense strength and endurance to get through without medical intervention, and the result was a very happy little person who is now enjoying a delightful life with her dads in Melbourne.

I am a born again convert to yoga, so don't get me started... I could talk about the personal benefits I have gained from the practice 'til the cows come home... but you don't have to listen to me:  there is very convincing evidence for the beneficial effects of yoga for everyone,  and also specifically for people with MS. (I just think everybody should be doing it!)

“Yoga is relatively inexpensive, generally safe, and may potentially improve multiple sclerosis symptoms. One rigorous MS clinical trial found that yoga decreased fatigue. Other studies in MS and various other medical conditions have reported improvement in anxiety, depression, fatigue, bladder function, pain, spasticity, weakness and walking. There are anecdotal reports but minimal research on yoga and sexual function. For general health, yoga may improve arthritis pain, reduce blood pressure, and promote weight loss. The effects of yoga on these conditions may secondarily benefit those with MS because these conditions may worsen disability and lower quality of life in those with MS.”

Onwards and Upwards !

20/7/21
So, today I went back to work... Finally!! - after almost 10 weeks of not working, since being diagnosed with MS.
And it was Awesome.

In the beginning...

15/7/21
A diagnosis of MS is massive, life-changing, and can be traumatic and certainly dramatic.

Having an MRI (to look for the typical so-called demyelinating lesions which cause the symptoms of MS) is fairly straightforward, but other tests sometimes need to be done.

I had a lumbar puncture as part of my work up... not everybody has to have one. Sometimes a lumbar puncture is very straightforward. But it is a scary thing to have done.

Useful information can be gained to help confirm a diagnosis of MS through analysis of the fluid taken from the epidural space, around the spinal cord: fluid (CSF - which bathes the brain and spinal cord) is taken using a needle inserted between the bones of the spine. Even for a health professional like me who has actually performed LPs on patients in the past, it was a frightening test to have done.

My LP was unfortunately complicated by a dural leak - this is luckily not common: I developed progressive back pain and severe headache which resulted in me being admitted back into hospital 4 days later for a procedure called an epidural blood patch, performed in the operating theatre by 2 lovely and very experienced anaesthetists:

Approximately 20ml of blood was taken from a vein in my arm (prepared to be sterile) by one Dr, then immediately passed to the second Dr who had inserted a needle into my similarly prepped back, into the epidural space - the blood from my arm was then reinjected into the epidural space: the blood proceeds to clot within the space thereby sealing the leak.

During the procedure I was awake, having to stay perfectly still, sitting up in a hunched over position.

The procedure was pretty terrifying, especially after a difficult and protracted LP only 4 days earlier, but it went very smoothly, and all the staff in the operating theatre were incredibly kind and supportive.

After being taken back to the ward, I then had to lie very still on my back for the next 4 hours, to allow the process occurring around my spinal cord to work properly... I was not even allowed to get up to pee! - but somehow I managed.

My severe  headache immediately resolved as the blood did its thing and sealed the leak. I went home from hospital the next morning. I had another 5 or 6 days of backache afterwards. I was not allowed to do any significant exercise like my normally sanity-preserving yoga, as any straining could theoretically disturb the healing clot at the leak site, for a full 2 weeks after this procedure.

Resting is difficult for me, but I still went to my yoga classes, lying quietly under a cosy blanket while my surrounding yogis did their thing, and I practiced calmly, without any sweating or straining,  just inside my head!

It was a massive relief to return to active yoga after those 2 weeks!

My LP results further confirmed my diagnosis of MS.

Cheers to not needing any more LPs in the future 😊.

So I have to run???

13/7/21
So, I did my first official training run, today, in beautiful Bridport, northern Tasmania. ... what a location 💙.

I haven't run for a while, and wasn't sure how things would go.... It was Great! - there was sunshine, birdsong, wildflowers, incredible coastline, sudden fractious rain for about 10minutes, and some rock-hopping 😊

Never again will I take for granted my senses:
- the smell of the bush, and of the beach
- the fact I can see (one of the commonest MS presentations is optic neuritis, which can cause temporary or permanent blindness)
- the sensation of rain falling on my face and body as I run
- the simple amazement at being able to run, to not fall , and not have to think about it... that my nervous system manages to coordinate it all for me, without conscious thought...
- to feel strong and coordinated ... to be able to ride a bike alongside my 7 year old - pure joy 💙

The human nervous system is a complex miracle in action, when it is working normally.

I am lucky.. many with MS are not as lucky as I have been so far, and may need help /  support / assistance with activities of every day life that most of us take for granted all the time.

Spare a quiet, mindful thought next time you jump out of bed in morning, next time you walk in the sunshine, dance, window shop ... whatever you are doing, spare a thought.

I am very grateful for everything I have, and  everything I am able to do.

Jumping life tracks... Hello MS!

12/7/21
I've had a really strange, very challenging time over the last couple of months.

I have been diagnosed with MS.

On May 3 this year, which feels like a lifetime ago, on an ordinary Monday, I found I couldn't walk properly... I felt like I was dragging my left leg through mud... I couldn't balance properly, and I couldn't run because my left leg felt like it wasn't registering contact with the ground. At yoga, I couldn't place my foot properly on the floor, although I could stand without falling. I tripped over my left toes a couple of times when walking up and down the hallway at work.

It was really strange, but I felt otherwise well. I hoped this weirdness would just go away by itself... but it didn't. So I went to the GP - not my normal GP - on a Saturday morning squeeze in appointment. The doctor I saw was simply amazing - empathic but obviously worried, extremely clinically astute, and incredibly thorough. I will be eternally grateful to her.

Doctor Lizzie sent me straight to emergency, where I was seen remarkably efficiently for someone who looked very well. I was physically examined, and had some tests (which were normal) but not the one I knew I needed: an MRI. They were not planning to to do the test my GP had sent me for ... but I left with a referral for an outpatient MRI.

That night I went to see (+met +had a photo taken with!) Tim Rogers, the rock god, perform at MONA, but I couldn't dance.

I eventually got my MRI 5 days later on a cancellation appointment - the results came through the next day and were overwhelmingly positive for Multiple Sclerosis. I have so many demyelinating lesions in my brain and spinal cord that the radiologist didn't even count them, describing them as "innumerable".

Madness and frantic phone calls rapidly followed (I was at work at the time and somehow managed to complete my morning, in my shocked state). I was in hospital the next day having treatment with high dose intravenous steroids, to knock the process that is active MS on its head, at least in the short term.

The treatment "fried my brain", profoundly affecting my cognition... I was not able to read, listen to music, sleep, or problem solve reliably for five weeks. I have not worked since the middle of May.

I am feeling much more normal now, and am about to go back to some very part time work, which will be great.

MS has no cure. This is a condition I will live with for the rest of my life. However, the treatments available for improving quality of life and minimising symptoms, exacerbations or relapses are excellent, well tolerated and improving all the time.

I would be eternally grateful if you could help support this cause. I am planning on doing the 9.5km run event on September 19 in Launceston, health permitting, obviously.

My aim is to become a poster chick for MS, so back me up here... give a little, give a lot, if you possibly can. This is most certainly a worthy cause.

With love and positivity,
From this still-shocked, but doing ok, woman.

Thank you my friends.
❤️

Walk, Run + Roll, I’m taking part to fight MS!

11/7/21

I’m joining in the MS Walk Run + Roll to make a difference in the lives of Australians living with multiple sclerosis.

I am committed to raising funds to ensure that people living with MS have access to the vital support and services they need to achieve their own unique goals and live well, whilst the search for a cure continues

Multiple sclerosis affects more young people than any other chronic neurological condition and the average age of diagnosis is 30. It can strike anyone at any time and the symptoms vary so widely.

Because of your generous support, the funds that are raised will allow people living with multiple sclerosis to access vital MS Support Services, such as MS Peer Support, or the MS Employment Support program keeping Australians living with multiple sclerosis in the workforce.

Thank you again for your support.
